Dosing for fennel is traditionally based on trial data or historical practice. The optimal dose for a natural product is often based on finding an appropriate balance of safety and efficacy. Fennel preparations will vary with manufacture and/or by product batch.
General treatment for breast-fed infants: a specific multi-ingredient product containing 164 mg of fennel, 97 mg of lemon balm, and 178 mg of German chamomile (Colimil) twice a day for one week.

Clinical dosing based on studies for infant colic:
- 0.1% fennel seed oil in a water emulsion and 0.4% polysorbate-80 has been used for one week in one study in infants between the ages of two and 12 weeks
- Herbal tea preparation containing extracts from natural herbs - chamomile, vervain, licorice, fennel and balm-mint, including natural flavours and glucose as an instant powder for dissolution in hot water. 150ml dose given at every episode of colic from 7 days; no more than 3 times per day.
- Herbal tea containing fennel - 35ml 3 times a day (max 150mL/day)
- Colimil extract containing Matricariae recutita (71.10mg/kg/day),
Foeniculum vulgare (65.71mg/kg/day) and Melissa officinalis (38.75mg/kg/day) at a dose of
2mL/kg/day 2 times a day before feeding for 7 days.
