- Patients who are sensitive to bismuth subsalicylate or to any ingredient in the formulation or component of the container
- Pediatric patients with influenza or chickenpox because risk of developing Reye’s syndrome
- Patients who are allergic to salicylates
- History of severe gastrointestinal bleed
- History of coagulopathy
- 2nd half of pregnancy
- Renal failure
- Gastrointestinal ulcer because of salicylates may worsen existing ulcers

- 524-1048mg every 30-60 minutes as needed
- Max dose 4.2g per 24 hours
- Duration of Therapy: <or= 2 days
- 262-524mg every 30- 60 minutes as needed
- Max dose 2.1g per 24 hours
- Duration of Therapy: <or= 2 days
- 131-262mg every 30 to 60 minutes as needed
- Max dose 1.05g per 24 hours
- Duration of Therapy: <or= 2 days
- 88-176mg every 30 to 60 minutes as needed
- Max dose 0.7g per 24 hours
- Duration of Therapy: <or= 2 days
Side Effects:
- Most common side effects is black tongue and stools, tinnitus. May also affect central nervous system causing anxiety, confusion, headache, mental depression, and slurred speech. Neurotoxicity associated with excessive doses of bismuth salts are rare and is reversible following discontinuation of drug.
See physician if:
- < 2 years old develop bloody stools, a rectal temperature of >38.5 C or persistent vomiting
- If symptoms last longer than 2 days despite optimum nonprescription pharmacologic treatment
- If symptoms persist longer than 14 days without pharmacologic treatment
