Attapulgite
Patient Counselling
For the age of 3-6 years, dose is 300mg/dose (max daily dose of 2100mg). For the age of 6-12 years, dose is 600-750 mg/dose (max daily dose of 4500mg). For the age of over 12 years, dose is 1200-1500 mg/dose (max daily dose of 8400mg). An initial dose is give at the onset of diarrhea symptoms, followed by a dose after each bowel movement for a maximum of 2 days. Educate patients on signs and symptoms of significant reaction (swelling of throat, tightening of chest, wheezing, difficulty breathing, blue skin colour, seizures, or swelling of the face). These cases are extremely rare and unlikely to happen with attapulgite, however, it is important to educate patients about rare but significant adverse effects (1). Also, for the liquid formula, tell the patient to shake well before administering. Do not administer attapulgite within 2-3 hours of other medications.
