For patients who are taking psyllium, each
dose of psyllium should be administered with at least 250 mL of water or juice
to prevent fecal impaction or esophageal obstruction.
· Psyllium should not be used if the patient is dehydrated or fluid restricted. It should not be taken within 2 hours of other medications.
· It may take up to 3 months for maximum effect.
· Psyllium should be used in conjunction with a healthy diet which includes fibre. Fibre should be increased gradually every 7 to 10 days for a maximum of 25-38 g daily.
· Moreover, patients will benefit from increased dietary fruits and vegetable intake, as well as regular exercise for symptomatic improvement of constipation.
