Senna
- Senna is a stimulant laxative that can be used for short-term relief of chronic constipation, when other first and second-line agents have failed.
- Senna works by increasing the motility of the gut.
- Senna should be taken at bedtime.
- Side effects include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rarely allergic reactions.
- Senna may discolour urine red to pink or brown to black.
- If nausea, vomiting, persistent diarrhea or abdominal cramps develop, stop use and contact your prescriber.
- Contact prescriber is constipation worsens or you do not experience relief.
