Zinc may be considered as a second line option for treating sore next to the various analgesics. There are several high quality randomized controlled trials, meta-analysis and tertiary literature sources which demonstrate the effectiveness of zinc for reducing sore throat symptoms. When selecting a zinc product, not all is alike. It is important to consider the amount of elemental zinc, dosage form, and additives which all affect the efficacy. Zinc gluconate lozenges containing greater than 13.3 mg elemental zinc beginning at symptom onset has the best evidence for reduce symptom severity and duration. Avoid zinc gels, sprays and syrups and products containing citrate or tartaric acid additives due to less evidence demonstration efficacy and safety for acute sore throat symptoms.
