From the available RCT evidence regarding the efficacy of blue and red light therapy for the treatment of acne, light therapy seems to be effective in the treatment of inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne. However, the therapy fails to be sustainable, and is only effective while the patient is continually receiving treatments. In terms of safety, common adverse effects reported are short term, and include dryness and itchiness of the skin with ongoing treatments. No studies have examined the long term effects of phototherapy. In terms of convenience, these treatments are only administered at a dermatologist’s office or at a beauty spa, which requires commitment from the patient. In terms of cost, the average cost of 1 session is approximately $100.
