Patient Counselling
-Cetirizine is a medication that will reduce itching and swelling associated with hives
-It can be taken with or without food
Dosing:
- Adult (6 years old and up): 5-10 mg once daily
- Pediatric
- Use with caution in elderly as they may be more sensitive to its’ effects
- Alcohol and other CNS depressants can potentiate the effects of cetirizine and increase sedation
- Contraindicated if patient has an allergy to hydroxyzine or cetirizine
- See physician if symptoms haven’t resolved in 7 days

- 6-12 months: 2.5 mg once daily
- 12 months – 2 years: 2.5 mg once daily; may increase to 2.5 mg q12h
- 2-6 years: 2.5 mg once daily; may increase to 2.5 mg q12h or 5 mg once daily
- < 6 years: avoid use
- 6-11 years: maximum of 2.5 mg once daily
- 12 years and up (with CrCl > 11mL/min): maximum of 5 mg once daily (CI if CrCL<11mL/min)
- < 6 years: avoid use
- 6-11 years: maximum of 2.5 mg once daily
- 12 years and up: maximum of 5 mg once daily
