The mainstay of dry eye syndrome (DES) management is the use of artificial tear products. If longer duration is required, lubricating ocular ointments containing petrolatum or mineral oil can be used. LACRISERT® is also a possible option if a longer duration of symptom relief is desired.
The evidence for efficacy of LACRISERT® ophthalmic inserts generally seems to be positive. Judging based on the results of a few, relatively well-done trials hydroxypropyl cellulose (the main ingredient in LACRISERT®) can help control many of the symptoms of dry eye syndrome for patients with a variety of co- morbidities. LACRISERT is generally well tolerated, the most common side effect reported is blurred vision. Additionally, it’s a great option if chronic, preservative-free artificial tear use is required. However, because administration of the insert can be a complex procedure for some patients and because of the cost of the medication (~$100/month), more traditional DES therapy like artificial tear solutions are recommend before this product is trialed.
