Place in Therapy
Topical anesthetics are suitable a suitable treatment option for patients with infrequent minor aphthous ulcers (3). As infrequent minor aphthous ulcers typically resolve without treatment, topical anesthetics are effective for providing short-term pain relief until resolution. However, topical anesthetics are fast acting (onset of action within 5 minutes) but have a short duration of action (20-45 minutes). Thus, they may be used in conjunction with over-the-counter oral analgesics and protectants to provide longer pain relief (5).
