Patient Counselling
Intended Benefit: Latex condoms are effective for both pregnancy prevention and prevention of some sexually transmitted infections such as HIV. They act as a mechanical barrier that prevents contact between semen and the sexual partner. (1)
Latex Condom Use Information:
· Proper storage is important (away from light, heat and in a dry cool place); can be kept for up to 5 years if unopened and stored appropriately. (1)
· If the condom doesn't come with a reservoir at the end, make sure to leave room between the tip of the penis and condom to collect the sperm upon ejaculation. (2)
· After having intercourse, withdraw the penis right away. Holding the rim of the condom while withdrawing reduces slippage. (2)
· For lubrication, use only water-based products such as K-Y jelly. Oil based products can degrade latex condoms thereby decreasing the effectiveness. (2)
· Used condoms should be wrapped in tissue and thrown in the garbage, not the toilet. (2)
· Table below represents the key steps in condom use. (1)
Potential Side Effects:
· If there is an allergy to latex, talk to the pharmacist for alternatives such as polyurethane condoms. (1,2)
· The use of spermicides increases the incidence of urinary tract infections because of the alteration of the vaginal flora. (1)
· Some men experience decreased sensation and loss of erection with latex condom use; may try polyurethane condoms. (1)
Warnings/Contraindications:
· Check the expiry date before using the condom and store them in a cool dry place. (2)
· Storing condoms in wallets or cars for a long period of time is not recommended. (2)
· Caution the use of fingernails and jewelry as they can tear or break condoms. (2)
· If the condom breaks, the female partner should insert some spermicide into the vagina and potentially speak to a pharmacist or physician about emergency contraception. (2)
· Technical problems are common when men are not used to using condoms (unrecognized leak, slippage, place condom upside down on the penis and thus rolled it on inside out)
