Product Availability
Boric acid needs to be compounded in the pharmacy, as it is not commercially available. Boric acid can be prepared with or without a prescription from a physician, as it is a schedule II drug. Boric acid can be compounded as a suppository or intravaginal capsule.
Compounding instructions for vaginal suppositories
· Boric Acid 600mg Fatty Acid Base Vaginal Suppositories
o Ingredients include: boric acid 600mg; Colloidal Silicon Dioxide (silica gel) 25mg; and Fatty Acid Suppository Base qs (several commercial suppository vehicles)
o Method of preparation: Calculate the require quantity of each ingredient for the total number to be prepared; Accurately weight and/or measure each ingredient; Heat the fatty acid base to approximately 45 degrees Celsius until melted; Triturate the boric acid and colloidal silicon dioxide together to a fine powder; Sprinkle the powders on the melted fatty acid base and mix well; Cool slightly, then pour into suppository mold; Cool then trim the suppositories; Package and label.
o Use Auxiliary labels: “For vaginal Use” and “Keep out of reach of Children”
o Storage: In a tight, light resistant container. The product is temperature sensitive so keep away from heat or humidity, store in a cool, dry place.
o Stability: A beyond use date of 6 months can be used for this preparation
· Boric Acid 600mg Intravaginal Capsules
o Use gelatin capsules with filing size 00 or 0
o Use boric acid USP grade
o Measure out the number of capsules that will be needed for the dosing duration and add two additional capsules to the total formulation (Ex. If the treatment is 600mg BID for 14 days, then you will need to have enough powder to make 30 capsules)
o Fill each capsule with approximately 600mg of boric acid powder
