BISMUTH
Patient Counselling
Liquid:
· Shake well before use
· Use the dosing cup included
· To be used in adults and children older than 12 years
· Take 2 tbsp (30mL) every ½ hour to 1 hour as needed to a maximum of 240mL in 24 hours
Tablet:
· Chew or dissolve in mouth
· To be used in adults and children over 12 years of age
· 2 tablets to be taken every ½ to 1 hour as needed to a maximum dose of 16 tablets in 24 hours
General Instructions:
· Darkening of stools (dark grey)
· Drink plenty of fluids
· Do not use if you have: an ulcer, coagulation problems, bloody or black stool
Stop use and see a doctor if:
· Symptoms worsen or last more than 2 days
· Ringing in the ears or loss of hearing occurs
· Diarrhea lasts more than 3 days
Drug Interactions1,2
· Anticoagulants, antiplatelet agents- may potentiate gastric bleeding
· Tetracycline derivatives: bismuth may decrease the serum concentration of tetracycline derivatives. Dosing of tetracycline should occur 2 hours before or 6 hours after bismuth. The need for separation of doses during H.pylori eradication is questionable.
