Lemon Balm (Melissa Officinalis) is a natural health product that has been studied in the treatment of Herpes Labialis. The exact mechanism of action has not been fully elucidated, although some researchers suggest that it may have direct antiviral activity. (1) Lemon balm has been studied in 4 clinical trials of varying quality, and current evidence suggests that it may reduce the size of the affected area, number of blisters and complaints on day 2 of an outbreak. (1,2)
While further research is still needed to confirm the efficacy of this product, it is likely safe when used topically for up to 10 days. (2) Lomaherpan®, a 1% dried lemon balm extract cream, is the product most studied in the clinical trials. (2) Based on its potential benefit and favourable side effect profile, it represents an acceptable second line option for the treatment of Herpes Labialis, or and alternative for patients who prefer to take a more natural approach.
