Probiotics may be beneficial in people with allergic rhinitis. Although there is no evidence of its effect on inflammatory markers involved in the mechanism of allergic rhinitis, there is evidence of its benefit in symptomatic relief as prophylaxis and as treatment, as well as a reduction in the use of relief medications. However, studies demonstrating benefit did not use the same species and strains of bacteria, and typically included L. salivarius, L. gasseri, L. acidophilus, L. paracasei, Bifidobacterium spp. Probiotics have also been effective as adjunct therapy in reducing symptom scores as well as the need for use of relief medications. The mechanism of action of probiotics in allergic rhinitis is unclear. Generally, probiotic strains studied for allergic rhinitis are relatively safe, but should be used cautiously in immunocompromised patients. Some minor adverse events may include flatulence and diarrhea. There is no long-term data for safety and efficacy for the long-term use.
