Phenol has wide empiric use. It is known for being an oral anesthetic/analgesic; it’s role is to numb the throat. The actual evidence available is not abundant or robust. Trials found were small blinded intervention studies where Chloraseptic® was compared to placebo or another agent <1, 2>. The studies did show that it was superior to placebo for sore throat pain. The studies were quite old; Chloraseptic has been around for quite a length of time. Physician’s opinion also favours the use of phenol throat sprays for mild pharyngitis <3>. Tertiary resources listed above recommend phenol throat spray for sore throat.
