Chamomile

Place in Therapy
Chamomile has been used for symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea1. When compared to placebo, chamomile considerably reduced the number of stool frequency in the therapy group. Therapy was safe and well tolerated, with an occurrence of side effects comparable to placebo1. However, only one study was done that evaluated the effectiveness and tolerability of using apple pectin-chamomile extract in children to treat non-infectious diarrhea1. Thus, the results will be hard to extrapolate to children and adults with diarrhea in other countries. A role for chamomile may be in patients that have contraindication or failure to loperamide or bismuth subsalicylate. In addition, chamomile can be for patients that have a preference for natural health products. The dose of chamomile is dosed according to age and can be found under patient counselling.
