Lobeline has been added to smoking cessation aids; however, it is unclear whether lobeline is effective for this use. Studies demonstrating the effectiveness and safety of lobeline in smoking cessation are limited in terms of date of publishing, study design quality, lobelia product used and patient populations. This product should be used with caution and health care professional guidance.
For smoking cessation, 5mg of lobeline, a constituent of lobelia, has been taken by mouth twice daily; 0.5 milligram lozenges may also be used. It has only been studied in people 18 years and older. Additional research is needed before a conclusion can be made on the safety and efficacy of lobeline in smoking cessation.
