Psyllium increases
activity of intestine and promotes bowel movement (1,2).
Indicated for (1,2):
Constipation
Lowering cholesterol
Diarrhea (controversial)
Traveller’s Diarrhea (controversial)
Irritable bowel syndrome
Other GI effects
Contraindications (1,2):
If you have allergies to any of it’s ingredients
If you have allergies to the drug or any of its components
If you have fecal impaction
If you have a block in your intestines
If you experience nausea or vomiting
If you have fever
If you have abdominal pain
If you have rectal bleeding
If you have difficulty swallowing
If you have trouble breathing
If you are pregnant, Metamucil is considered safe for occasional constipation during pregnancy.
Do not use powder in patients less than 6 years of age
Do not use powder in infants or children
Do not use capsules in children < 12 years of age
Use with caution and monitor electrolytes of patients with impaired renal function
Avoid breathing in Metamucil
Keep out of the reach of children
Common side effects (very mild and transient) (1,2)
1. GI side effects: abdominal cramps, constipation, diarrhea, esophageal or bowel obstruction, bloating
2. Respiratory: bronchospasm
3. Allergies
4. Watery eyes and nose
How to take the medication (1,2)
1. Dissolve powder in 240 ml of glass. Stir and drink promptly.
2. Take with meals
3. Do not take product within 2 hours of taking other medications

Dosing: Adult/Geriatric/ Children >12
Psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid 3.4 g is equivalent to 2 g Soluble fiber
Storage (1,2)
Store below 30°C. Keep lid tightly closed to protect from humidity.
