S. boulardii is a probiotic, specifically it is a yeast. It acts as temporary flora to help re-establish normal gastrointestinal microflora. Take 2 capsules of 250mg S. boulardii starting 5 days prior to departure and continuing therapy while on vacation. (1) Side effects that may be experienced include flatulence, constipation and thirst. If you experience difficulty breathing or develop hives, seek medical attention. This drug should only be used in pregnancy if cleared by your doctor. Use of antifungal medications can diminish the effect of S. boulardii.
