NRT Lozenge
Place in Therapy
Nicotine lozenges are a viable option as first line in terms of NRT. In comparison to the other options of NRT, there is no significant difference in abstinence rates. All options including the lozenges, have shown to be better compared to placebo in helping patients quit smoking. There are no functional differences between the lozenge and other forms of NRT and usually relies on personal preference from the patient. As with other NRTs, lozenges are not associated with any significant side effects.
Lozenges in particular have a certain advantage in that they can be used easily as breakthrough treatment to treat
sudden cravings. As a result, they are often used in combination therapy such as using them with patches or even bupropion. When used as combination therapy, it was shown to have better smoking cessation outcomes compared to
mono-therapy. As a result, nicotine lozenges could be used as a first line treatment in smoking cessation as mono- or in combination therapy. NRT is especially preferred for patients who are unwilling to go on a prescription drug therapy.
