Patient Counselling
Famotidine should be taken at bedtime if taken once daily. For prevention of GERD associated with meals, taking famotidine 1 hour before meals should prevent onset of symptoms.
If symptoms persist a second tablet can be taken but do not excess more than 2 tablets in 24 hours. Do not take 2 doses at one time. If symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks despite famotidine use, the patient should contact their physician.
If pills cannot be swallowed, a liquid formulation exists and must be shaken before taken. Additional from this drug is not expected after 6 weeks of consistent use. If upset stomach is experienced when taking famotidine, take with food.
The onset of famotidine should be expected to occur within 1 hour of taking it and last 10-12 hours.
The most common adverse effects of famotidine include headache, loose stools, and dizziness. If any severe stomach upset, vomiting, trouble
speaking, feinting, changes in thinking clearly, bleeding, rash, and chest pain/fast heart-beating occurs, call your doctor.
Storage of famotidine tablets should be kept at room temperature, dark, dry place away from children. Do not store in the bathroom or kitchen. Store liquid suspension at room temperature. Throw away any part not used after 1 month.
