IRON
Patient Counselling
How does it work?
RAS may be linked to iron deficiency and iron replacement therapy may help in treating RAS.
Administration
Start iron therapy at low doses to eliminate/reduce some of the side effects. Iron is better absorbed with an empty stomach, however if the side effects are not tolerable, iron can be taken with meals (this will reduce its absorption).
Side effects
Dark stools, constipation, nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, diarrhea, usually subside with time except for dark stools. Rare
side effects include serious hypersensitivity reactions and hemochromatosis (iron overload).
Who should not take iron?
If you have hypersensitivity to iron or hemochromatosis (iron overload).
