Patient Counselling
Due to lack of studies with conclusive efficacy and
concerns of toxicity, we would not recommend bloodroot oral rinses or
toothpastes to patients. If a patient insists
that they would like to try a natural health product they should understand the
lack of conclusive efficacy and the risks associated with the product.
Most trials have only established efficacy for 6 months, and therefore it is not recommended to use for longer than 6 months. Doses have not been well-established and these doses are recommended based on commonly used dosing in trials. For prevention, 300mcg/mL of sanguinaria extract twice daily for up to 6 months. For treatment, oral rinses containing 0.01% sanguinarine used daily for up to 6 weeks.
