2nd Generation Antihistamines
Place in Therapy
Place in Therapy:
Second generation antihistamines are the first line option for allergic rhinitis, largely due to high quality evidence for efficacy and mild side effects. They have been shown to be effective in reducing symptom severity, improving quality of life and minimizing impact of symptoms on activities of daily living. They have a relatively quick onset (15-30 minutes), and a long duration of action, resulting in convenient once daily dosing. They are most effective when taken prior to allergen exposure to allow time for onset of antihistaminic effect.
