Ocular lubricants containing polyvinyl alcohol (1.4%) are an acceptable alternative for relief of dry eye symptoms. Evidence supporting the use of polyvinyl alcohol as a viscosity agent over other ocular lubricant preparations is insufficient. Preservative free ocular lubricants, including preparations containing polyvinyl alcohol, are preferred over those with a preservative, as preservatives can worsen dry eye symptoms with prolonged use.
