Patient Counselling:
Intended Benefit: Using the female condom during intercourse provides dual protection against pregnancy and sexually-transmitted infections.
Female Condom Use Information:
The condom consists of an inner and outer ring. The inner ring should be inserted well into the vagina, as far as it can go (past the pubic bone). The outer ring should remain about one inch outside of the vagina during intercourse, and acts as an anchor to prevent the entire condom from being pushed into the vagina, as well as to enable the condom to be easily removed. To remove the female condom, the outer ring should be squeezed and twisted before standing up, in order to prevent semen from spilling out of the pouch. The condom should then be gently pulled from the vagina.
No specialized fitting is required for the female condom. The female condom can be inserted up to 8 hours after intercourse, should be used throughout the duration of intercourse, and should be removed immediately after intercourse. There is currently not enough information regarding the safety and efficacy of re-using the female condom for multiple acts of intercourse. Therefore, re-using the female condom is NOT recommended at this time.
Potential Side effects:
Rustling noises during intercourse may occur when the female condom is used. The rustling noises caused by the female condom during intercourse may be decreased slightly by using additional lubricant. Both water and oil-based lubricants can be used with the female condom.
Breakage or slippage of the female condom may occur during intercourse. If any slippage or breakage of the female condom occurs during intercourse, women should use Emergency Contraception.
Warnings/Contraindications:
Do not use the female condom if either sexual partner is allergic to nitrile or polyurethane. The female condom is safe to use in people with latex allergy, as it does not contain latex.
Spermicides should not be used with the female condom, since the use of spermicides with the female condom has not been studied. As well, the female condom should not be used at the same time as male condoms. Using both the female and the male condom during intercourse may lead to breakage of one or both condoms.
Do not use the female condom when a tampon is in the vagina, or if any vaginal anatomy abnormalities are present.
Other: The female condom may be used during pregnancy or after childbirth.
