Patient Counselling Information
It is important to tell the patients that dietary modifications and increased intake of probiotics may only be effective in prevention of VVC and not treatment. If the patient starts experiencing signs and symptoms of VVC it is imperative that they see their doctor or a pharmacist and receive appropriate therapy.
If the patient chooses to take L. Acidophilus capsules instead of the yogurt they can add the contents of the capsule to cereal, milk, fruit juice, or water. Probiotics are well tolerated and safe in the general population and some of the side effects include bloating and flatulence. Oral L. acidophilus should be avoided in patients with intestinal damage or immunodeficiency, or who have an overgrowth of intestinal bacteria1.
