Dukoral is an inactivated vaccine whose components can induce immunity against specific bacteria (producing the ETEC toxin) that can cause travelers’ diarrhea. It is a suspension that, when mixed, is taken orally by adults or children >2years. It is available over-the-counter in Canada, and should be kept in the refrigerator at a temperature of 2-8°C upon purchase. It consists of two doses that must be taken at least 1 week apart and no more than 6 weeks apart. The second dose must be taken at least 1 week before travel in order to be effective. The package contains a vial with the vaccine and a buffer sachet of sodium hydrogen carbonate powder. To self-administer the vaccine:
Side effects are minimal and not common; the most commonly reported symptoms occur <1% of the time and may include vomiting, abdominal pain, and cramps. Those with hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation or those who are acutely ill should not take this vaccine. Dukoral does not protect against all causes of travelers’ diarrhea, and thus, precaution through other preventative measures is recommended.
