The trials used 20g of Benefiber powder in 1 L ORS. (1,2) They used male children between the age of 4 and 24 months. It can be used to reduce duration of diarrhea in this population (1,2). The parents should add 20g of Benefiber into 1 L of ORS for children (1,2). It should be stirred well until dissolved completely. Dose and administer ORS based on recommendations made in the “Oral Rehydration Therapy” section. If using a brand other than Benefiber, then check to make sure it contains partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG). Benefiber may cause GI side-effects such as abdominal cramps, gas and/or diarrhea. (3) Therefore, the babies should be monitored for the worsening of their symptoms.
