Adults
Dose: 4 mg stat, then take 2mg after every loose bowel movement.1 Maximum of 16 mg/day.(1)
Children (< 12)
Use of loperamide should be consulted with a physician in this age group.(1)
Children (<2)
Loperamide is contraindicated in children under the age of two.(1)
Pregnancy
Safety has not been established in pregnancy.(2)
Breastfeeding
Loperamide may travel into the breast milk, therefore not recommended when breastfeeding.(2)

Adverse Effects
- Abdominal cramps, discomfort, drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, skin rash(1)
- Drug interaction with p-glyco-protein inhibitors: quinidine, ritonavir, itraconazle and ketoconazole.(2)
- Drug interaction with CYP3A4 inhibitors: itraconazole and ketoconazole.(2)
- Drug interaction with CYP2C8 inhibitor: gemfibrozil.(2)
Comments
- Discontinue if symptoms persist for more than 48 hours(1)
- Contraindicated for those with hypersensitivity to loperamide(2)
