Patient Counselling
· Caution should be used in patients with asthma, as lobelia may have respiratory stimulant effects.
· Caution should be used in patients with cardiovascular disease, as lobelia may cause increased heart rate and hypotension.
· Caution must be exercised in patients who are taking CNS depressants, as lobelia may have sedative effects.
· Caution in renal and hepatic failure.
· During pregnancy lobelia may induce emesis and should be avoided.
· It should be avoided in patients with known allergy/hypersensitivity to lobelia, its constituents, or other plants in the Campanulaceae family as well.
· Numerous potential drug and herbal interactions exist including antiasthma, anti-hypertensive, CNS depressants and diuretic drugs.
· Other names for Lobelia include: Cardinal flower, Red lobelia, Scarlet lobelia, Puke weed, and Indian tobacco.
