Benzophenones are a class of broad-spectrum sunscreen covering most of UVB plus lower-mid UVA range. It includes a vast range of ingredients including oxybenzone and its coverage ranges from 260 to 380 nm depending on the specific chemical ingredient within the class. While they are generally well-tolerated, it could cause skin sensitization as well as rare allergic reactions in specific use with oxybenzones. This class of chemical ingredient must also be combined with physical barriers such as titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide for stability. The Canadian Dermatology Association recommends the use of sunscreens that offer broad-spectrum UVA protection, supporting the use of benzophenones but will not cover for the full UVA spectrum.
