Nasal Irrigation
Patient Counselling
- Patients can either purchase one of the over-the-counter (OTC) products, as well as make a salt-water solution at home to irrigate their nasal cavity (home-made solutions should use boiled or distilled water).
- The solution should be room temperature and using a syringe or a spray, patients can direct the solution into the nostril towards the back of the head.
- The solution will go in through one nostril and flow back out through the other, so it is best to irrigate with the patient’s head bent over a sink.
- Patients can irrigate once or twice a day, and may experience some mild burning or irritation the first few times they irrigate.
