When Do I use Acetaminophen/Ibuprofen?
Oral analgesics should be administered as soon as symptoms occur after sun exposure.. There is less pain relief after 24 hours of getting the sunburn, so treat early.
How much do I administer?
Ibuprofen/Advil
Acetaminophen/Tylenol
Adults
400mg Q6-8H PRN
(MDD: 1.2g)
325mg Q4-6H PRN
(MDD 4g)
Children
5-10mg/kg/dose
(MDD: 4 doses)
10-15mg/kg/dose Q4-6H PRN
(MDD 65mg/kg/day)
Is ibuprofen/acetaminophen right for me?
Ibuprofen and acetaminophen are generally very safe medications. However, caution should be used if you are on warfarin therapy as these drugs may increase the risk of bleeding. Ibuprofen should not be used if you are allergic to aspirin. Do not use ibuprofen if you are in your third trimester of pregnancy.
Are there side effects?
Acetaminophen in large doses may potentially cause kidney or liver damage. Ibuprofen may cause GI upset, ulcers or bleeds.
