Patient Counselling
There are a number of wart removal products available over-the-counter. Some products contain salicylic acid + lactic acid as the active ingredients. This combination therapy has been shown to be effective and safe in treating warts, but it can take up to 12 weeks or several months for treatment to occur. This product should be avoided in patients who have diabetes, poor circulation, or weak immune system. They should consult a health care professional for professional advice, as there may be other more suitable treatments available.
How to use wart removal products safely:
· These products are for external use only.
· Wash hands before and after applying the wart removal product.
· Soak the wart in warm water for 5 minutes, then gently rub away loose tissue with a pumice stone, emery board file or rough washcloth.
· Protect healthy skin around the wart by applying a thin layer of white petrolatum (such as Vaseline). Apply the liquid to the wart 1 drop at a time until the affected area is covered. Let it air dry, then cover, with waterproof adhesive tape. If the preparation touches healthy skin, immediately wash it off with soap and water. Apply once daily after shower.
· Covering the wart will help prevent transmission to other people.
· Do not apply any product to the skin that is red, broken, or swollen.
· Do not use on birthmarks, moles, genital/facial, hairy warts or mucous membranes.
· Avoid inhaling fumes, These products are highly inflammable-store at room temperature away from fire or flame.
· If product gets into the eye, flush with water for 15 minutes.
· Do not use any product for more than 12 weeks.
· See your doctor, podiatrist or chiropodist if the wart is not gone after 12 weeks of treatment or if the healthy skin has been damaged.
