PROPOLIS
Patient Counselling
How does it work?
Propolis has flavonoid properties that have shown to have antimicrobial, antioxidant and free-radical scavenging ability.
Administration
Propolis 500mg: taken orally daily
Propolis solution: apply solution to the cotton swab and apply to ulcer
Side effects
Propolis is generally well tolerated, however it should be avoided in patients who are allergic to propolis and bee stings/bee products. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include swelling, redness, itching of the skin and fever.
Who should not take propolis?
There is not enough evidence to recommend propolis during pregnancy and breastfeeding and therefore should be avoided in those populations. It should also be avoided in those who have allergies to propolis, bee stings/bee products, Balsam of Peru, as well as asthmatic patients.
Propolis should be avoided if the patient is also on the following medications:
· Metronidazole
· Antimicrobial drugs
· Anticoagulants
· Anti-cancer agents
· Antifungals
· Anti-inflammatory drugs
· Infertility drugs
