What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is found naturally in some foods (i.e. fish) or artificially added to foods (i.e. fortified dairy and soy products). 1 Vitamin D is also available as a dietary supplement and can be synthesized from sun exposure. This vitamin has many roles in the body such as facilitating calcium absorption, bone growth and remodeling, immune functions, and possibly mood.2
What is the adequate intake for vitamin D?
Male/female= 200-600 IU/day, pregnancy= 200IU/day1
What happens when I have too much or too little?
Excess: enzyme interference, antiplatelet activity in high doses (risk of hemorrhage) 1
Deficiency: retinal degeneration, hemolytic anemia, muscle weakness, neurological damage1
